Gum Graft

Gum grafts are performed to replace inadequate or missing attached gum around the neck of the tooth. This attached gum seals off the root and underlying bone from the oral cavity protecting it from the invasion of oral bacteria. Some people never develop adequate attached gum, and in others the attached gum has been lost due to trauma or disease. Without sufficient attachment the gum can recede due to a loss of bone support for the teeth resulting in tooth sensitivity and cosmetic issues, and possible loss of the affected teeth.

There are two types of gum grafts: a gingival graft, and a connective tissue graft. The type of graft needed depends on the type of gum defect present as well as the purpose of the graft. A gingival graft is used to bring the tissues back to a healthy state or to prepare for caps or fillings that a dentist will place. A connective tissue graft is used for esthetics by covering the exposed roots of the teeth and also to provide tissue attachment.
